Filming and Photography Schedule

I have created a filming and photography schedule table which shows the description of the shot and camera angles and movements I have used while filming and taking the photos. I have finished filming and taking photos for my teaser trailer, poster and website and this schedule shows the clips I have collected. I wanted to get all my filming and photos done in one day and this schedule is what I used to ensure I had everything I needed. I did all my filming on the 13th Novemeber 2011 at my nans house with all five girls starring in my trailer but have not had the time to put this schedule up untill now.

Trip to the Apple Store in Milton Keynes

On the 21st of October our school arranged for our media class to attend an Apple workshop session in order to learn more about iMovie and become more confident in using it. As a first time iMovie user the workshop session was extremely helpful and insightful. During the workshop I learnt how to; create a new project, cropping film clips, use the precision editor, muting both music and voices, using beat markers, adding sound effects, text and transitions, as well as using advanced tasks such as adding a cut away clip and using blue and green screens. Below are some screen shots of me using what I have learnt from the apple store in the making of my horror trailer.

Script

I have decided to have some dialogue in my trailer so I have created a script for each section of dialogue which can be seen below along with the names of the characters and who plays them.

Characters
Bloody Mary

Trisha

Kate

Nadi

Alison

Dialogue 1
Trisha– Did you hear about Mary?

Alison- What the creepy loner kid?

Trisha- Yea, she killed herself, went and slit her throat!

Kate- Most probably from all the abuse you gave her Ali!

Dialogue 2
Alison- Let’s give Mary a proper sent off.

Trisha- How do you plan on doing that?

Alison- Lets play Bloody Mary?

Dialogue 3
Kate- (on the floor dying reaching out to Nadi talking in a weak dying voice ) Help me.

Dialogue 4
Nadi – (painting from running) I think she’s gone

Alison- (pointing behind Nadi ) Behind you!

Dialogue 5
Alison- (tears running down her eyes) Why are you doing this!!!

Bloody Mary- (Tilts head sideways and smiles) Because you called me.

Health and Safety

I have been researching health and safety for when I am filming my horror teaser trailer as there are some shots I wish to film that could be hazardous if not done correctly and under the health and safety regulations.

I have come across the Health and Safety Executive website (HSE) where they have stated what needs to be done in order to abide by the health and safety legislation's. There website states the following:

What you should know:

  • Health and safety legislation applies to all work activities in the UK, whether conducted by UK nationals or foreigners, even if they are not being paid.
  • Legal duties under health and safety law cannot be delegated.

Define responsibilities and duties

Employers are required to have a management system in place to control the risk to employees and others from their work. The industry uses large numbers of independent companies and freelancers and it is sometimes difficult to decide who the employer is. However, in the majority of cases, the employer will be the producer or production company.

System for managing health and safety

The size and complexity of management systems for health and safety depend on the size and complexity of the production. General advice on management systems can be found in. Please note, an employer’s legal duty to manage health and safety cannot be delegated to a consultant or to anyone else.

Assess and manage risks

Risk assessment is a fundamental part of managing health and safety and helps you to identify hazards and control the risk they create for those involved in your production. The process requires you to:
  • take the time to systematically look at your activities
  • decide what hazards they present
  • assess the risk of people being exposed to these hazards
  • find ways to either eliminate or control them

Review

You must review and update both the risk assessments you have made and the controls you put in place as work progresses to make sure they are still working. After the production, it is good practise to review the whole system to see whether useful lessons could be learned for the future.

From these procedures I now know that I must do the following before filming:
  • Define responsibilities and duties
  • Have a system for managing health and safety
  • Assess and manage risks
  • Regularly review the process and procedures for managing risk
As the "producer" I should ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that the people working with and me are not exposed to risks to their health and safety. Therefore when filming one of my actors "drowning in the bath tub" I will insure the water is neither to cold or hot, that someone who is trained in first aid is on hand (Myself and my friend, Gill Ingram), that the filming needed is done as swiftly and quickly as possible and that she doesn't have to hold her breath underwater very long so no harm will come to her. I will also have to be cautious when filming another actor "falling down the stairs" by finding the safest possible way for her to fall down the stairs which is to only have her roll very slowly from 4 stairs from the bottom to the bottom and then fast forwarding it on iMovie. I will also ensure someone who knows first aid will be on hand (myself) and that the filming is done as quickly as possible. Lastly I will also have to be cautious when filming my villain swinging a fake machete at a victims head by ensuring she doesn't swing it hard or fast and making sure she stops before hitting her and then I will make this clip faster in iMovie.

I have found out that filming a horror can be most dangourous when it comes to health and saftey due to location and lighting, so I will ensure the locations I plan on filming in will be clear of all hazards that can trip of injure my actors and I will ensure there is enough lighting for the actors to be able to see what they are doing without ruining the feel of my horror trailer. I will also discuss the safety issues before choosing my actors and filming my trailer to avoid the risks identified.

Ideas

After researching other horror teaser trailers, posters and websites along with the results from my questionnaire I have decided to create a horror teaser trailer advertising a teen/slasher horror.

Initial Idea
My initial idea is to create my trailer with the basic storyline of a couple of girls having a sleepover that know a girl from school that has recently killed herself due to them bulling her and she comes back and seeks revenge by killing them off one by one.

Possible Filming Locations
I have a few possible locations that I could film my trailer at. These locations consist of:
  • A Grave Yard - Because it can be very creepy at night.
  • My Grandparents House - As it is quite remote and is a nice size to be filming in.
  • My Grandparents Garage - This would be prefect for any torture or killing scenes
  • Outside My Grandparents House - For when my victims are running away from there killer.
  • At Ashridge - This too can become very creepy at night which is great for my horror trailer.
  • At Blows Downs - This can be fairly remote and is surrounded by trees and fields.
  • Priory Church/Wingrave Church - Both these churches would be perfect as they are both relatively scary at night.
Possible Props
Given the genre of my trailer I have some possible props in mind that I could use:
  • A Trick Fold-In Knife - This can be used for when my killer is stabbing the victims as it will look like the knife is going into there bodies.
  • Long Blood Covered Plastic Machete - This can be used as yet another murder weapon.
  • White Contacts - For my killers costume in order to make her look ghostly and scary.
  • Yellow Number Cards - To help create the feel of a murder scene.
  • White Masking Tape - To outline the dead body.
  • A Blue Flashing Light - To flash outside to make it look like the police is outside.
  • A Bath - For one of the victims to drown in.
  • Rope - To tie up on of the victims.
  • A Chair - What one of the victims will be tied into.
  • Fake Blood - To create stab wounds.
  • Blood Capsules - To be used when blood is to come out of the victims mouths.
  • A Real Knife - For when i need the knife to look more realistic.
Possible Characters
From my initial idea I have some ideas for possible characters:
  • The Killer - Which will be the girl that comes back to kill those who tormented her.
  • The Victims - Possibly four victims, all girls. One will be the bitchy one that was the main culprit for bullying the killer and she will be the last to die in the garage. The others will die in the bath tub, in the dinning room and outside the house.
  • A Detective - Who will be seen towards the beginning of the trailer looking over the dead bodies.
Possible Character Names and Costumes
Possible names and costumes consist of:
  • (For the Killer) Bloody Mary, Amanda or she will not have a name. I would like her to be dressed in white flowing clothing in order to make her look ghostly, that will be covered in blood at some point in the trailer. Her throat will be slit so fake blood will be needed and I would like her to be wearing white contacts to make her look creepy.
  • (For the Victims) Although their names wont be mentioned much I have some possible names for them and they are, Trisha, Kate, Alison, Nadi, Amber and possibly Sarah. They can be wearing normal everyday clothes or possibly pyjamas as they are at a sleepover.
  • (For the Detective) The detective does not need a name but will be in a black suit in order to look like a detective.
Possible Film Names
Below I have a list of possible names for my horror trailer which i have asked a few people to vote on which one they prefer. The results are also below.
  • Bloody Mary - 7
  • Revenge - 3
  • Never Forgot - 2
  • Justice - 6
  • The Sleepover - 6
Judging from the results I will be calling my horror trailer Bloody Mary, therefore my killer will be called Bloody Mary.

Possible Text Fonts
The possible text fonts above are a mixture of fonts that are copyright free that i have downloaded from www.dafont.com, however the font at the very top is my own font that i created using fake blood and have taken a photo of and removed the background.

Out of the fonts above I sent out a little survey asking people which font they liked the best and thought would suit my horror teaser trailer best with the sub genre of a teen-slasher. From the results the top font (also the font i created myself) got 4 votes out of 20, the second font in the row of fonts above recieved 7 votes out of 20, the font thrid in the row got 6 votes out of 20 and lastly the bottom font in the row only recieved 3. Due to these results I will using the font below in both my movie trailer along with my 2 ancillary task (my website and poster).

Planning

I have now reached the planning stage of my coursework where I will be planning the layout and contents of my ancillary tasks along with the contents of my teaser trailer, which will consist of where and what I will be filming accompanied by how I will put together my trailer. After researching what possible audiences would like from a horror teaser trailer and what they would like to accompany them through the use of a questionnaire, I have come to the decision to create a teen slasher horror teaser trailer accompanied with a poster and website.

Analysis of my Questionnaire

Q1) Are you male or female?
As we can see from the pie chart above, the majority of people who answered my questionnaire where female (60%) and was closely followed by the number of males who answered my questionnaire (40%).

Q2) What age category do you fit in?
From  the pie chart we can see that the majority of people asked where ages 15-17 followed by 18-23.

Q3) What movie genre do you prefer?
From the bar graph above we can clearly see that the majority of candidates prefer to watch a horror rather than the other genres, which is the result I was hoping for as that is the genre I wish to use when creating my teaser trailer.

Q4) What hybrid/sub-genre of horror do you prefer?
After asking the candidates what sub-genre/hybrid of horror they prefer, slasher horrors where the most popular, followed by a tie between physiological horrors, comedy horrors and teen horrors.

Q5) What do you expect to see/hear in a horror teaser trailer?
Analysing the results for question 5 I can seer that everyone expects to see the release date in a horror teaser trailer, and some would also like the best bits, sound effects, eerie, dark music and explanation text or the story line. From these results I will be deciding what my trailer will consist of.

Q6) What characters would you like to be a part of a horror teaser trailer?

As we can see from the pie chart, if I want to create a trailer that my candidates will enjoy I shall have to ensure that I include my evil/villain character and my victims into the trailer.

Q7) What would you prefer to accompany a horror teaser trailer?
To accompany my teaser trailer I have to create two of the three ancillary tasks stated in the pie chart above, and thanks to the results it looks like I shall be creating the movies poster and website, which is a relieve as those where the two I wanted to do.

Q8) What would you like to see on a movies website?
The majority of candidate wish to have the trailer, the cast and photos present on the movies website as well as comments and reviews, a contact us page, merchandise and some videos. Which is all of the possible answers I gave the candidates in my questionnaire so in order to please everyone I might as well create all the pages for my website.

Q9) What would you expect to see on a horror movies poster?
Looking at the bar graph above I have decided that as every option provided has been picked by at least 10 of the 15 candidates then I am going to try and incorporate all the above into my poster.

Q10) What would you expect to see on the front cover of a magazine featuring a horror movie?
Looking at the graph above I can see that my candidates expect to see the movie title and release date on a magazine cover as well as the casts names. Therefor if i decide to create a magazine cover then I will ensure I incorporate them into the design.

Q11) What time of year would you prefer a horror film to be released in the cinemas?
As we can see all the candidates I have asked on my questionnaire would prefer a horror film to be released in autumn or winter, but the majority said autumn. Which is a good result as that means I could maybe even release my film on Halloween.

Review:

So overall, after analysing my questionnaire results I have come to the decision to create a horror teaser trailer with the sub-genre of a teen/slasher horror as all my actors will be teenagers and the results from this questionnaire show that people would prefer a slasher, so I have incorporated the two. I will also be incorporating the main characters, best bits, release date and sound effects into my horror teaser trailer as again it is what my audience wants.
The characters I shall be using in my trailer will consist of one villain as well as victims, whether or not I incorporate a sarcastic character into the mix I don't know yet.
Accompanying my teaser trailer I have decided to create a movie poster and a movie website for my two ancillary task as it is what my audience wants and it is something different to create from the magazine cover i created last year.
On my movies website I will be creating 7 pages that will consist of my homepage (with the trailer on it) a cast page, a gallery, a video page, a merchandise page, a comments and reviews page and lastly a contact us page.
On my horror movie poster I have decided to incorporate all of the code and conventions I have mentioned in my questionnaire which are; the title, the release date, a catch phrase/quote, the casts names, the creators of the movie, the directors name and one large image occupying the background of the poster.
Lastly I will be putting the release date for my horror movie to be on Halloween as the majority of people would prefer the release in autumn, and what better time than Halloween to create tension and suspense.
